We believe the enthusiastic support and welcome from other resident associations, local government, and strong cadre of supporters makes our choice an ideal home for the F-100 museum. Our new home will be part of a vibrant aviation environment and one of historic significance.

We spent a great deal of time and travel weighing the benefits of each location and it is with great pleasure that we announce the new F-100 Super Sabre Museum site choice as being Ellington Airport in Houston TX. This location is a superb site centrally located in the nation, easily accessible from highways or airports and provides a great many hotels in the area to take care of your travel needs.

Ellington Airport fulfills our criteria to an exceptional level. While Ellington Airport, itself, is not a commercial airport (thus avoiding consequences and problems of security), it is close to two major airports, Houston Intercontinental and Houston Hobby. It is at the crossroads of two major highways with I-10 and I-45 among others. It is also situated on the busy byway to a major recreation area of the Texas Gulf Coast and Galveston. There also... one can enjoy a whole vacation in Galveston, Moody Garden, Lone Star Aviation Museum and Kemah Park among many other attractions for both young and old.

<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Ellington Airport has offered very strong support to the F-100 Super Sabre Museum from both local agencies and other organizations that share the airport as well as the management. Ellington Airport (KEFD) is the site of a Texas Air National Guard unit, Texas Army National Guard, the US Coast Guard, NASA, Flying Tigers, Southwest Airport Services, the Collings Foundation and their Vietnam Warbird Collection (including ‘our’ F-100F), Wings Over Houston Airshow, Aeros and Autos Expo and the proposed future relocation of Lone Star Aviation Museum now in Galveston, TX. There are numerous developments in the works for KEFD, which will now include the F-100 Super Sabre Museum. <span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; The agreement, which was developed to improve communications between the two organizations and eliminate an overlap in responsibilities, restricts members from serving as officers or committee chairpersons for both corporations at the same time. “As the original founder of the SSS, Les Frazier was the driving force that built that organization up from a handful of members to a robust membership of over 1,500 people,” Coleman said, “and we are going to miss the wealth of experience he brought to our management team.”

The Executive Director position will be filled by Laird Leavoy, who is currently the Director of Museum Operations. The son of Les Leavoy, a distinguished World War II and F-100 pilot, he was exposed to the F-100 at an early age. He is a pharmaceutical distributor and lives in Euless, TX. “Laird is the ideal choice to fill this vacant position,” Coleman went on to say, “He has been with the organization since it was formed and lives in a strategic location to monitor programs of interest to the FSS.”

For more information about this news please email the FSS at contactus@friendsofthesupersabre.com.

Cheers and Check Six
Ron It might take 30 min to install it if you have good access to the tail. You can make one easily and I can get you the instructions.

<span style="font-family: "Sylfaen","serif"; It is a task that must be performed slowly and carefully by analyzing a matrix of important elements, such as:

Will the museum be centrally located in the US?

Will it be supported by a robust infrastructure of highways, tourist attractions, and passing travellers?

Will the local community be willing to act as the official caretaker of the static display aircraft as required by the National Museum of the USAF?

Will the local government be willing to donate land for the museum and provide tax incentives for its construction and operation?

Is there a local facility nearby where the static display aircraft, memorabilia, and artifacts can be stored until the museum is built?

Initially, Fox-Stephens Field in Gilmer, TX was selected as the site. The location was good; an infrastructure was in place; and the city was enthusiastic and helpful. Our studies showed that an additional plus was the willingness of a local museum to act as the official caretaker for our aircraft while the museum was being built. Unfortunately, further studies revealed an unexpected and unpredictable issue with one of the partners in this venture---an issue so serious that it was necessary to reluctantly withdraw Gilmer from consideration.

At the present time, our board of directors is in prelimary discussions with local officials at a larger, more centrally located site. Once these discussion are completed and an agreement is finalized and put in place, the location of the new museum will be announced to FSS members and nonmembers alike.

It's Official: Super Sabre Maintainers and the FSS Agree to Merge Their Efforts

The F-100 flight line is up and running, and will soon be open for business. That's the official word. This is important news that bodes well for the future of the FSS and its efforts to preserve the legacy of the Super Sabre. After all, our mission statement clearly defines "members" to be "Pilots, Aircrew Members, Crew Chiefs, Armorers, Support Personnel, Families, Writers, Journalists, Historians, and Aviation Enthusiasts."

The agreement between the Super Sabre Maintainers (SSM) and the FSS is simple. Stripped of the fancy words and legalese it will work like this:

The SSM will be free to organize their group any way they see fit. In other words, the SSM will be an organization of F-100 maintainers managed by F-100 maintainers.

Each individual who joins the SSM will automatically become a member of the FSS upon receipt of an appropriate donation to the latter.

Although the SSM’s primary mission in the FSS will be recruiting and fund raising, it will also be responsible for identifying and organizing teams of SSM volunteers willing to assist in maintaining and refurbishing F-100 aircraft loaned for static display in the Super Sabre Museum.

In return for its assistance in recruiting, fund raising, and maintenance/refurbishment, the FSS will assist the SSM with its marketing, advertising, and direct mail efforts using the FSS web site and news blog.

"It's a fantastic arrangement" said Anne Coleman, the FSS president; "the more members we get with backgrounds other than being a former F-100 pilot, the more optimistic I become about the future of the FSS."

The SSM effort will be headed up by Joe Gordy, an experienced F-100 maintainer whose F-100 assignments include tours of duty at Don Muang AB, Thailand; Cannon AFB, New Mexico; and Misawa, AB, Japan. We will be posting more information about Joe and his organization on our web site in a few days. Meanwhile, his email address is; jgordy@wildblue.net.

Cheers and Check Six,
Without question, they are an important part of the F-100 legacy, a group that, like the F-100 maintainers, has gone unnoticed and unappreciated for all these years. The question is, how do we reach out to these family members and bring them in to the FSS? There are ways to do this, of course, using state-of-the-art advertising and marketing techniques but these techniques are at best "tricks" and at the very least "disingenuous." We need to conduct our campaign at a much more personal level letting family members know that we care about them and want them to be part of the FSS family.

While pondering the problem described above, inspiration came from an unexpected and unlikely source; an email sent by a Stephen P. White and later forwarded to some of us in the FSS by our fearless COO, Bob Dunham. The email is a bit long for a blog and besides, it is of a personal nature; so, I am summarizing as follows:

Stephen's son Patrick recently received an autographed picture from thud driver Col. Don Revers, and is preparing to hang it in the "fighter pilot room" of their house. Later, when his Mom, Jule, asked where he planned to go to college he said, “Mom I want to go to the US Air Force Academy, if not there then to Texas A&M and join the Corps of Cadets. Mom I want to fly and to someday be a fighter pilot”.

Patrick's father went on to say, "I told Patrick the other day that as long as he continues to stay out of trouble (which he is never in), work hard, keep up his grades, that I will always help him in every way to be successful in whatever direction or profession he ultimately takes in life. I told Patrick if he has USAF pilot rating wings pinned on his chest one day his grandpa will be so proud, but I would be standing by and just grinning ear to ear. He is a really great kid and if I have only one regret it is that his grandfather did not get to see this neat boy grow up for a few more years in his lifetime. I know Bob watches over us, and someday I hope when I arrive where he is that he says 'Good job boy, you did real good'"

I have never met Patrick, nor do I know if there was even an F-100 pilot or aircrew member in his family; but the look on his face in these pictures says it all. A look like that is more than enough reason to recruit F-100 family members into the FSS!

Know what I think? I think we are running out of time and we are not doing our job. We should all be out there every day, recruiting new members, be it our old crew chiefs; wives, widows, daughters, and sons of F-100 pilots; and most importantly, the "Patricks" out there waiting to be encouraged. Dont have time, or are too busy? BS!! You didnt say that when your country needed you, or when your name was on the scheduling board, so dont say that now. Just get out there and do it!

Cheers and Check Six,

Ron Standerfer
Director of Communications
Friends of the Super Sabre
ronstanderfer@friendsofthesupersabre.com

Pamela Detwiler, the FSS Needs You!

It's been just over a year since I received her email---crisp, business-like and to the point. Her late father would have liked that email I think. Everyone knows that Hun drivers never had time to BS around with a lot of words, when just a few would do. Here's what she wrote:

Dear Sir:

As the extremely proud daughter of an F100 pilot, I want to keep the history of the Super Sabre alive for many more generations too. I'm sure there are many sons and daughters that feel the same way and that would be glad to pay the annual membership. Open your membership to dependents so we can do our small part to help. Perhaps you could modify the membership benefits for dependents if there were certain benefits you preferred to offer only the pilots.
Respectfully,
Pamela E. Detwiler
2nd born daughter of Barry N. Detwiler, Maj., deceased

The first time I read her email I was absolutely dumbfounded. This woman had managed to capture the very essence of what preserving the legacy of the F-100 is all about, and presumably, she did so with no prompting from anyone. Awesome!

So, I read the email a couple of more times wondering what's wrong with this picture? But of course, I knew very well what's wrong with this picture. It was March 2010 and the FSS was only a gleam in a few guys' eyes and her chance of joining the SSS were close to zero. Nevertheless, I gave it my best shot. I packaged the email up with an encouraging endorsement and sent it off to everyone in the SSS who might be able to help. Presumably it is still swirling around there in a kind of devil's triangle for paperwork.

Fast forward one year, and now I am up to my eyeballs with projects to help the FSS get up and running; and I must say that a lot of good things are happening. For example, we are soon going to be inundated by a swarm of maintenance folks and that's a very good thing. But I cant get Pamela Detwiler out of my mind. She is, I decided, nothing less than the poster girl we need for recruiting family members.

So what's the problem? Send her an email, invite her to join, and get on with it. Right? Well, not exactly. You see, after looking for over a month I cant find her original email---only the part I forwarded to the SSS which doesnt include her email address. Bottom line: I havent a clue how to contact her
.
So, here's my message:

Pamela if you are reading this please email me at ronstanderfer@friendsofthesupersabre.com. I've never met Pete, but Anne Coleman, the FSS president, knows exactly who he is. You see, Pete was an armorer or "gun plumber"who remembers the late LTC Paul Cohagen aka Anne's father when he flew F-100s in the Air Force.
I have a feeling that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of "Pete Byam's" scattered all across the country. It makes sense when you consider the number of F-100s that were built and the years they were in service world wide. The Pete Byams I'm talking about possessed a variety of skill sets that enabled them to be crew chiefs, armorers, avionics technicians, sheet metal specialists and so on. They were literally the glue that held the F-100 fleet together. The sad thing is that when the last F-100 was delivered to the boneyard, there was no place for the maintainers to go to remember and be remembered---until now.
Now, I can tell you without hesitation that F-100 maintainers are not only welcome to join the the FSS, but are a sought after commodity. Why? For two reasons: 1) the F-100 maintainers are as much a part of the F-100 legacy as anyone else; and our mission is to preserve the legacy of the F-100; and 2) There is work to be done---a lot of work to disassemble the five aircraft that will be on display in our museum; transport them; reassemble them; and then dress them up in squadron colors before putting them on display. All this work will require volunteers---volunteers that know what they are doing. And what better volunteers than former F-100 maintainers?
At this point I would like to interject a personal note to the F-100 maintainers. I flew a combat tour in the F-100D with the 355th TFS at Phu Cat AB, RVN and also F models as a Misty FAC and I can say without hesitation that one of the main reasons I was able to get to the target and back safely 250 times was because of the tireless support that guys like you provided working long hours on the ramp, sweating your butts off in the hot sun, and I thank you for that. It’s time you guys get the recognition you deserve and I think the FSS is the place to get it.

For more information about this post contact:
Ron Statnderfer
Director of Communications
contactus@friendsofthesupersabre.com

It’s Official! The aircraft currently resides at Sheppard AFB, TX and must have all military equipment removed (demilitarized) before it can be loaned to the City. The demilitarization work will be accomplished by a team of volunteers. Afterwards, it will go on display at the Flight of the Phoenix Aviation Museum (FOTPAM), located at Fox Stephens Field – Gilmer Municipal Airport. The FOTPAM will provide an interim home for the aircraft and her younger sister F-100F 56-3880, as well as for all the artifacts and memorabilia we have collected so far. These items will be displayed there until our museum is built nearby.

When asked what this latest acquisition means to the FSS, our President Anne Coleman was enthusiastic and characteristically focused. “What it means”, she said, “is that we already have been offered two of the five aircraft we plan to put on static display with two more waiting in the wings --- and we’ve only had our doors open for business since Thanksgiving. Surely it’s time to get off the fence and stop wondering if the FSS is a viable organization. It also means it’s time for all of us to get to work and ask ourselves some hard questions. Specifically:

1. Have we, as SSS and FSS members contacted everyone we know who is eligible to join the FSS---not just pilots; but crew chiefs, armorers, family members etc.---urging them to join us? If not, why not? It’s a simple thing to do. If nothing else, forward this email to them along with a link to our web site (www.friendsofthesupersabre.com). It’s your organization too. More members mean more funds and more volunteers and we need both.

2. Have you pledged your artifacts and memorabilia to the FSS? Or have you decided to wait and let your family deal with it after you have flown West? What are you waiting for? Don’t forget there will soon be an interim home for your stuff. Go to our web site and make your pledge now!

3. Last but not least, do you have some particular skill or talent that you are willing to share with us? Now is the time to volunteer, because things are happening fast. Every FSS board member has his or her email address posted on our web site, plus a general address contactus@friendsofthesupersabre.com so, there is no excuse for not contacting someone to discuss how you can help.”

“The acquisition of the F-100D” she continued, “shows what happens when a team of volunteers and professionals work together and I am particularly grateful for all the hard work by the City of Gilmer, the FOTPAM, and my board of directors. You made it happen. Well done!”

For more information please contact,
Ron Standerfer
Director of Communications
ronstanderfer@friendsofthesupersabre.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pbcbuzz.blogspot.com/2011/02/its-official-f-100d-54-2151-has-been.html' title='It’s Official! You see, the F-100 Super Saber Museum is planned to be a dedicated Museum - solely and only to the F-100 and those who served with her. Well, the second part of that is really more important than the first part - there are F-100s on posts, in parks, and in Museums across the country - of course, not all five models - but, there is no museum dedicated to the men and women who served with her - that'd be YOU!

To truly do the F-100 Super Sabre Honor, we need to honor more than just the airframe - for it was the MEN who were her heart and soul that made the F-100 the weapons platform and the success that she was. We do not plan for a museum with just five airplanes - we need YOUR MEMORABILIA - your photos, letters, personal things, anything and everything you can imagine or part with - so we can honor YOU!

I know that may sound a bit "vain", but please overlook that reaction - those of the future (our young men and women of America) need to know who the F-100 pilots were and what they stood for and accomplished. That cannot happen without your help.

The SSS Legacy Project http://www.supersabresociety.com/legacy2.htm, and the Legacy Pledge were set up to give you a vehicle to set this in motion. What you want to part with now - you can send to me at the address below. What you or your family wants to keep - I ask you to discuss with them and decide what you or they would like to see reside in the Museum at some point - identify those items, take the "documentation" actions (document who, what, when and where on each item so we'll know the details) and then just list them on a Pledge form and send that form to me. We aren't saying you have to donate things now, but at some point - no matter how many years from now - these things should find a home in the F-100 Super Sabre Museum - and you need to set that in motion - now!.

First, we (and I personally) guarantee all items will be kept in climate controlled storage until the Museum is complete - and once that happens - they will always be displayed with your name (or that of your family) attached as donors. IF desired - we plan to have complete displays (probably rotating each 6 mos) of each and every person possible - individual displays of YOUR life and career. Plus, there will be a display of all the F-100 pilots - names, photos, etc. And you won't have to pay us $100 to have your name added (although we will gladly accept the donation).

One last plea - please think about this now! Don't leave this for your widow or family to have to decide after you've flown West. We need to know what you know - all the details - and certainly they can't provide that.

If there is anything I can do to help, or question that you have, please e-mail me or call at 512-633-0386. My mailing address for all items is:

Super Sabre Museum

c/o Bob Dunham

320 Cherokee Trail

Georgetown, TX 78633

Thanks for your patience and understanding in this.

Very Sincerely,

Bob Dunham

SSS, FSS

Awaiting the Arrival of the Big 880!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; most likely as the first training mission at Luke AFB. Those of us who flew the T-Bird in pilot training were overwhelmed by the rate of acceleration on takeoff and found ourselves so far behind the aircraft that we forgot to raise the gear, come out of afterburner, or all of the above. It is fitting therefore, that the first static display aircraft that we will be receiving for our F-100 museum is an F-100F; serial number 56-3880 to be exact. As we speak, the bird is waiting in line to be "demilitarized" and made ready for delivery. There is a lot of demilitarization going on at Davis Monthan these days as large numbers of F-15s and F-16s are being mothballed under the legacy program. We are still hoping that it will be delivered to us before the SSS reunion.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; Quite a lot actually, and more information is arriving every day. We know, for example, that the bird was stationed in Sioux City, IA with the ANG's 174 TFS and most likely deployed with them to Phu Cat AB, RVN during the Pueblo Crisis. If so, it is also likely that she flew her share of Misty missions since they had access to all the F models on the base. Hopefully one of the Mistys may remember her.

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; There, amongst the many pictures of her you will find out that she has a deep dark secret in her past. She was actually a drone in her final years! Who knew? Meanwhile, what we'd like to know is what she was doing in the late 1950s and early to mid 1960s when she was bright, shiny silver and serving with an active duty fighter squadron. SSS President Urges Strong Support for the FSS!

During the past year, there have been vigorous debates about how or even would the FSS and its much larger brother the Super Sabre Society(SSS) be able to work together toward the common goal of preserving the legacy of the F-100 Super Sabre. This weekend Bill Gorton, the President of the SSS stepped up to the plate and resolved the issue once and for all. In an article posted in the The Intake, the official journal of the Super Sabre Society, Gorton asserted, “Although the FSS is entirely separate from the SSS, it can make a major contribution to the capture/preservation of F-100 history. So, please support it generously."
Gorton's message couldn't be clearer and was well received by the FSS Board of Directors. "When you come right down to it," an FSS spokesman said, "The future of the FSS and in many respects, the future of the F-100’s legacy will stand or fall on a single issue---money. That’s why it is important that everyone of us visit the new FSS website to learn who they are, what they plan to do, and most importantly how to make a donation. We owe it to ourselves and owe it to the old Super Sabre who served us so well. The website, he added, can be found at http://www.friendsofthesupersabre.com/."

For further information please contact:
Ron Standerfer
Director of Communications
Friends of the Super Sabre
ronstanderfer@friendsofthesupersabre.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pbcbuzz.blogspot.com/2010/11/its-official-sss-president-urges-strong.html' title='It's Official!
